As my time in this course comes to an end, I am looking back at the development of my portfolio and the RU Stealth project. This project was more than just a technical exercise in computer engineering; it was a lesson in how to communicate complex systems to a specific audience of recruiters and fellow developers. Two primary takeaways stand out as I reflect on my progress and the final project.
Making the Invisible Tangible
The most significant lesson I learned is the value of technical transparency. In engineering, we often treat code like a black box, but this course taught me that "screencasting captures what words can’t". By producing a walkthrough of the RU Stealth data flow, I was able to demonstrate the "tacit aspects" of the hardware-software handshake that a static resume simply cannot convey.
Specifically, showing the Arduino calculating distance while simultaneously displaying the Processing IDE parsing that data proves a level of systems integration that is difficult to describe in text. This reflects the Shannon and Weaver model of communication, where I acted as the transmitter, encoding physical distance into a digital signal for my audience.
Strategic Identity and Professional Framing
My second major takeaway is how digital media functions as a tool for identity construction. Before this course, I viewed project documentation as a secondary task. However, as Gabriella Coleman discusses, producing media allows individuals to control their own narratives and establish a specific public presence.
For a computer engineering major, a well-composed video is a strategic move. It frames me as a detail-oriented engineer who understands the underlying physics of a system, not just someone who can copy and paste code. By utilizing the "speaking for itself" heuristic, I established credibility by showing a functional 85% data accuracy metric in real-time. This course has shifted my perspective on how I present my work, ensuring that every project on my site serves a clear, strategic purpose for my future career.
